From August 31, 2026, Queensland is introducing some of the most significant changes to e-bike legislation we’ve seen yet. Between new licence requirements for teens and strict speed limits on shared paths, there is a lot to wrap your head around.

The Big One: Licence Requirements for Riders 16+

The most talked-about change hitting on August 31 is the new age and licence restriction. In an effort to standardise safety, the Queensland government is mandating that:

1. If you are 16 or older, you must hold at least a valid learner driver licence (L’s) to ride a legal e-bike (EPAC) unsupervised on public roads or paths.
2. Riders aged 12 to 17 without a licence can still ride, but only under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian.
3. Kids under 12 are no longer permitted to ride e-bikes on public roads or paths.

This is a big shift for families who have embraced e-bikes as the "new school bus." If your teenager uses their e-bike to get to footy practice or school, they’ll need to make sure they’ve secured their L-plates by the end of August.

Slow Your Roll: The 12 km/h Rule

While our SLEDZ bikes are built for torque and speed, the environment you’re riding in dictates how fast you can go. From July 1, 2026 (already in effect), and being strictly enforced alongside the August 31 licence laws, the following speed limits apply:

• Footpaths: A strict 12 km/h maximum.
• Shared Paths: You must slow down to 12 km/h when passing pedestrians.
• Bicycle Paths: You can still hit the standard 25 km/h limit unless signs state otherwise.

Think of it as "courtesy speed." When you’re on the path with walkers and kids, the 12 km/h rule ensures everyone stays safe. When you hit the dedicated bike lanes or the road, that’s where you can let the motor do the heavy lifting up to the legal 25 km/h assist limit.

It’s a great question. In Queensland (and across Australia), for an e-bike to be classified as a bicycle (EPAC), it generally must have a motor with a maximum continuous rated power of 250W that cuts out at 25 km/h.
