There is nothing quite like the feeling of cruising along the Byron Bay coastline on a sunny afternoon. The wind in your hair, the smell of salt spray, and the effortless glide of an electric bike, it’s the ultimate way to get around without the soul-crushing traffic of Jonson Street.
At Ezriderz, we’ve seen the e-bike revolution take over Australia since we started back in 2016. It’s been amazing to see more people ditching the car and opting for a cleaner, more joyful way to travel. But as our shared paths get busier, we’ve noticed a few "newbie" mistakes creeping in.
Whether you’re on our flagship SLEDZ series or any other set of wheels, being a legend on the shared path is about more than just looking good. It’s about respect, safety, and making sure everyone, from toddlers to tourists, can enjoy the view.
Are you accidentally being "that person" on the path? Let’s dive into the most common shared-path mistakes and how you can ride like a pro.
1. Treating the Path Like a Race Track
We get it. Our SLEDZ bikes come with 500W to 1000W motors that pack a serious punch. It’s tempting to see how fast you can zip from point A to point B. But a shared path isn't a velodrome or a highway.
In NSW, the law is clear: pedestrians always have the right of way. If you’re flying past a family at 25km/h, you’re not just breaking etiquette; you’re being dangerous.
The Fix: Use your power wisely. When you see pedestrians, dogs on leads, or children, drop your pedal assist level down. Aim to pass at a jogging pace. Remember, an e-bike is heavier than a standard bike, which means it takes longer to stop. Give yourself, and others, the space to react.
2. The "Silent Assassin" Approach
One of the best things about a high-quality electric bike is how quiet the motor is. Unfortunately, that also makes you a "silent assassin" on the path. Pedestrians often rely on their ears more than their eyes to sense what’s coming from behind.
If you zoom past someone without warning, you’re likely to give them a heart-stopping fright. Best case scenario? They jump. Worst case? They step right into your path.
The Fix: Use your voice or your bell. A simple, friendly "Passing on your right!" or a "Ding-ding" from a distance is all it takes. Don't wait until you're right on their rear wheel to ring the bell, give them a few seconds to process the sound.
3. The "Road Hog" Habit
On the road, we’re taught to take our lane. On a shared path, the rules are different. One of the most common mistakes is riding two-abreast or drifting into the middle of the path while chatting.
When you block the entire width of the path, you make it impossible for oncoming riders to pass safely and force pedestrians onto the grass.
The Fix: Always keep left. Even if you’re riding with a mate, be ready to tuck into single file as soon as you see someone else. If you need to stop to check your phone or admire the surf, pull completely off the path so you’re not an obstacle.
4. Misunderstanding "Shared" vs. "Footpath"
This is a big one for NSW e-bike laws. Not every paved surface is a shared path.
In NSW, you can only ride on a footpath if:
- You are under 16 years old.
- You are an adult supervising a child under 16.
- There is a sign specifically marking it as a "Shared Path" (usually a pedestrian and bicycle symbol).
Riding a high-performance e-bike on a regular pedestrian footpath isn't just annoying for locals; it’s illegal and can result in a hefty fine.
The Fix: Look for the signs. If there’s no shared path sign, stick to the road or find a designated cycleway. Most of our coastal paths are clearly marked, but it pays to be sure before you twist the throttle.
5. Forgetting Your "Night Vision"
The Byron lifestyle doesn't stop when the sun goes down, but your visibility shouldn't either. Many riders forget that shared paths often lack the street lighting that roads have. If you’re riding at dusk or night without lights, you’re practically invisible to pedestrians and other riders until you’re right on top of them.
The Fix: Every SLEDZ bike comes with integrated, powerful LED headlights, but it’s up to you to turn them on! NSW law requires a white light on the front and a red light plus a red reflector on the rear when riding at night.

Why the SLEDZ is the Perfect Respectful Cruiser
At Ezriderz, we didn't just design the SLEDZ to be powerful; we designed it to be the ultimate cruiser. Here is why it’s the best choice for shared-path harmony:
- Stability at Low Speeds: Thanks to those signature fat tires, the SLEDZ is incredibly stable even when you’re slowing down to a crawl to pass a pram. No wobbling, no stress.
- Upright Riding Position: Unlike mountain bikes or road bikes that have you hunched over, the SLEDZ keeps you upright. This gives you a much better field of vision, allowing you to spot dogs or toddlers way before they become a hazard.
- Premium Braking: With Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, you have the stopping power you need to react safely to the unpredictable nature of shared paths.
- The "Cool" Factor: Let's be honest, when you look this good, you don't need to race. The SLEDZ is about the journey, not the destination. It encourages a relaxed, "Byron-style" pace that fits perfectly with path etiquette.
Keeping Your Ride Safe
If it’s been a while since your last ride, or if you’ve been putting your e-bike through its paces on the sand, it might be time for a check-up. Shared path safety starts with a bike that works perfectly.
From checking your brake pads to ensuring your bell is actually audible, a quick Safety Bike Service at our Byron shop can make all the difference.
The Golden Rule: Be a Local Legend
At the end of the day, shared paths are a community resource. We’re all out there to enjoy the fresh air and our beautiful backyard. A little bit of courtesy goes a long way.
Next time you’re out on your Ezriderz, try to be the rider that everyone is happy to see. Slow down, say g’day, and keep left. By following these simple tips, we can keep our paths safe, legal, and: most importantly: fun for everyone.
